I love visiting Japanese botanical gardens. My favorite part is the zen gardens raked into beautiful patterns. I seriously considered creating one in my own backyard a few years ago. This activity is a miniature form of that. Pour sand into a shallow container, then add rocks, plastic plants, and little figures that might have meaning for you, then rake patterns into the sand with a plastic fork or the pointy end of a knitting needle. Smooth it out and start over as many times as you want! It’s fun to swirl the sand around with your fingers, too. Put a lid on it when you’re done playing. Pull it out whenever you need some relaxing zen time.
